Roussillon

The small village of Roussillon, which is also ranked among "The Most BeautifulVillages of France", is famous for its ochre cliffs streaked with color from the brightest yellows to the deepest reds.

Ochre is everywhere, in the landscapes and in the washes used on the houses. Enjoy the many hues as you stroll through the streets and squares of Roussillon.

-  The village, with ochre-wash houses and narrow streets lined with craft studios and small shops.

-  The OchreTrail - a marked trail with informative signs on the geology and mining of ochre.

The round-trip stroll along the winding trail takes about 45 minutes and meanders through the loveliest earth pillars in the region.

-  The Mathieu Factory is a former ochre processing plant which has been renovated and presents information and displays on ochre processing and uses. Open every day from 20th of January to 31st of December. Closed on Mondays..

Then we ’ll take the D227 road and the D2 to get to the village of St. Saturnin les Apt, then Villars, an old ochre workers’ village, surrounded by cherry orchards.

Then, traveling on small country roads, we arrive in Rustrel.
-  The Provençal Colorado with its ochre cliffs and canyons.
-  The castle at the top of the village
-  The village bakery which has remained unchanged since 1890. The bread attracts bread-lovers from far and wide
-  The oil mill museum (from April to Sept. everyday except Tuesday morning and Thursday)
