The Castles in south of Luberon


-  Ansouis

You will see the red and gold flag of the Sabran Pontevès family, which floats over the charming small village of Ansouis ranked among "The Most Beautiful Villages in France". See : The Castle, from the 11th century, furnished and still occupied by the Sabran family. The castle is open every afternoon, with its weapons room, dining room, living rooms, bedrooms and wonderful kitchen. Then we continue on to

Lourmarin

See :
-  The Castle, partly built during the 15th century, partly Renaissance. Visit lasts one hour. Open every day.
-  In the cemetery : the tomb of writer Albert Camus.

Lunch is recommended in Lourmarin. Many restaurants propose good local cuisine.

We’ll Continue to the small villages of

Vaugines and Cucuron - both appeared in well-loved films.

-  Vaugines was the setting for Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring, while Cucuron provided the background for Horseman on the Roof, movie adaptation of Jean Giono’s novel.

Tour d’Aigues

The Renaissance Castle (16th c.) - Faience museum, exhibitions, the "Aigues rural habitat room" in the vaulted cellars (over 700 m²). Musical strolls in the honour courtyard (open every day).

-  For a splendid visit combining both wine and gardens, on your back to Aix or Marseille, stop at the Domaine Val Joanis. This estate is well known for its Côtes du Luberon wines, its historical gardens (ornamental gardens, vegetable gardens, orchards, rose gardens). Many other wine estates offer visits of the cellars and wine tastings.
